Engineers Without Borders USA – Wichita State University Chapter gives students the opportunity to use their engineering education to create meaningful, lasting change. The chapter’s primary project is a partnership with the community of Azacilo, Bolivia, focused on developing a sustainable solution to improve access to safe and reliable water.
Last year, Wichita State students traveled to Azacilo for an assessment trip, spending time with community members to better understand their needs, learn about daily life in the community, and gather the information needed to develop an effective and sustainable solution. That experience allowed students to build relationships with the people they are serving while applying their engineering knowledge to a complex, real-world challenge.
This upcoming summer, the chapter plans to return to Azacilo for the next major step: implementation. Students will build upon the work of the assessment team and begin turning their designs into reality, working alongside the community toward a long-term solution for its water needs.
The chapter’s commitment to service also extends close to home. Throughout the year, members volunteer with Wichita-area organizations including ReCycle Bikes, Rainbows United, and Habitat for Humanity. Whether serving in Wichita or working alongside a community thousands of miles away, Engineers Without Borders provides students with experiences that go far beyond the classroom—developing stronger engineers, thoughtful leaders, and graduates who understand the impact their skills can have on the world.
